Most types of industrial production will involve fasteners of some sort, but these need to be chosen carefully. Any piece of equipment you manufacture or assemble will only be as strong as its weakest point, and this is typically where it’s fastened to another piece. Consider if a part will be upgraded or modified down the road When some type of production will be modified or upgraded down the road, you need to use fasteners that will allow it to be disassembled. Permanent welding is not good in these cases as this will require metal cutting to separate two pieces. Rivets can be a better choice as these can be undone with the application of a heat source. For smaller pieces, liquid compounds can also be cut with the application of heat. 2. Note extremes in temperature Liquids and caulk are good for inexpensive fixes but they are not able to withstand extreme cold or heat. Cold will cause these to crack and heat can cause them to melt. Note if there will be thermal expansion Additionally, remember that some materials expand under heat and when this is the case, liquids and caulks may not hold very well as they will actually be pushed away from the materials being held. Rivets and screws are a better option as these cannot typically be forced out of their connection by expansion. 4. Consider vibrations and stress A product that undergoes extremes in vibration may not fare well with rivets, screws and nails since the vibrations can cause these to come undone. Liquids and caulks are typically considered much better options as these will not separate and can seep into small cracks and openings of wood and other porous materials for a much better hold under extreme vibrations. Stress should also be considered as this can crack smaller fasteners, whereas liquids and caulks are usually more able to hold under extreme stress.
